Alec Anderson has been a partner of Conyers, Dill & Pearman since 1991. He is head of the Trust & Private Client Department which includes responsibility for Codan Trust Company Limited, a licensed trust company affiliate of the firm. Alec=s specialist area of expertise is in trust law involving international estate planning for private clients; advising on corporate transactions involving trusts and assisting in trust litigation matters.
Alec graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a BA in Foreign Affairs. He received his LLB from the London School of Economics in 1983 and was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 1984 and subsequently to the Bermuda Bar and New York State Bar in1985. Prior to 1985, he was an associate lawyer for the London law firm, Macfarlanes, where he specialised in corporate and tax work. In 1984, whilst in England, he undertook his pupillage at No. 1 Brick Court, London. He joined Conyers, Dill & Pearman as an associate in September, 1985 and worked primarily in the corporate area for 4 years after which he specialised in trust law practice.
A regular contributor to trade and legal publications, Alec is author of the Bermuda Chapter in International Estate Planning (published by Mathew Bender, edited by Henry Christensen III); and in International Trust Precedents (published by Sweet & Maxwell) and International Charities (published by Wiley & Sons). He wrote a chapter on The Statutory Non-Charitable Purpose Trusts: Equity, Fiduciaries and Trusts (published by Carswell). He is the Bermuda editor of the legal publication, Trusts and Trustees. Further articles include Bermuda Purpose Trusts: A New Aspect To International Planning published in Trusts & Estates Magazine (August 1995), Challenge of Forced Heirship Laws to Bermuda Trusts and the Garner Case and Foreign Owned Trust Companies both published in International Money Marketing Magazine (March 1994), and Private Client Business, The Commercial Uses of Purpose Trusts for: Lex Mundi World Reports (Spring 1994).
Alec is Chairman of the Bermuda International Business Association Trust Law Committee and is a member of the Law Reform Sub-Committee on Trust Law and International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.
