Practice Description: Mr. Colvin advises high net worth international private clients and the institutions that service them on cross-border transactional issues, international tax, trust & estate planning, as well as private placement variable life insurance and annuity products.
 
Professional Background: In the years immediately preceding the establishment of an independent law practice in January 2007, Mr. Colvin was a partner in the International Private Banking group of the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie LLP. Prior to joining Baker & McKenzie, he enjoyed approximately 15 years practicing in the International Tax Section of Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Martin PC. In the 1980’s Mr. Colvin began his professional career as a certified public accountant in the International Tax Section of the then Big Eight accounting firm KPMG Peat Marwick. As further background in advising high net worth families, Mr. Colvin’s pre-professional experience includes working extensively for a large privately owned forest products group, structuring & marketing of commercial real estate syndications, as well as internships with the National Forest Products Association in Washington, DC and the First National Bank of South Carolina.
 
Professional Affiliations: Mr. Colvin is an Academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law and a member of the International Academy Anti-Money Laundering Committee. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“A.C.T.E.C.”) and a member of the ACTEC International Estate Planning Committee and former member of the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee. Mr. Colvin is a member of the U.K. based Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (“S.T.E.P.”). He is a member of the International Sections and the Taxation Sections of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Houston Bar Association. Mr. Colvin is a member of the Insurance Law Section of the -2- State Bar of Texas and the Probate, Trusts & Estates Section of the Houston Bar Association. He is a member of the International Bar Association’s Committee on Individual Tax and Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts & Succession as well as the IBA Committee on Closely Held and Growing Business Enterprises. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association. Mr. Colvin is also a member of the Houston Business & Estate Planning Council. Mr. Colvin founded and chaired IBC’s annual Global Family Office Summit for family office executives, family members and their advisors until its subsequent merger into IIR’s Family Office Forum. Mr. Colvin served on the Advisory Board of IBC’s Global Life Insurance Forum for five years.
 
Education & Bar Admittance: Mr. Colvin earned a degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Washington and Lee University in 1980. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center in 1986 followed by an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Houston Law Center in 1992. He is a Certified Public Accountant and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Colvin is licensed with the bar associations of Texas, Colorado and Washington, D.C.
